Should I stay or should I go – navigating the rough seas of career choices (for young immunologists)

The EFIS Young Immunologist Network (yEFIS Network) aims to gather all early career scientists in Europe working in Immunology. Within the different European Immunology Societies, self-organised Young Immunologist (YI) groups have arisen in the last years. However, there has been limited contact between them. The aim of this network is to bring all these YI groups together and build a European network to defend their interests on both a national and European level. EFIS provided the platform to start up this network and this is how in 2020 yEFIS Task Force and yEFIS Network were born.

The yEFIS session at the ECI 2021 will cover two main topics: “Funding opportunities for Early Career Researchers” and “Careers outside of academic research”. We will hear from Jonas Bunikis, the Research Programme Officer at the European Research Council (ERC) about the funding opportunities offered by the ERC, followed by a panel discussion about careers outside of academia. We will discuss topics including finding jobs outside of academia, benefits of academia versus jobs outside of academic research and transferrable skills with our six panelists:

Alexandra Flemming (Chief Editor at Nature Reviews Immunology)
Kat Arney (Science Communication)
Andreas Radbruch (EFIS president)
Jonas Bunikis (Research Programme Officer at the European Research Council)
Ben Bleasdale (Project Director)
Nilesh Amatya (Scientist at NextRNA)
